Atomic Learning is constantly adding new learning modules addressing common challenges found in higher education today. Here are 5 new series you may not have looked at yet:
- Creating Engaging Lessons Online
Many constraints are being put onto traditional classes in terms of time and material to be covered. As a result, many teachers have started using online materials and activities to effectively teach the material. However, creating online lessons is very different from creating lessons for the classroom. This online course takes you through the information you need to know to successfully create engaging online lessons. Whether you are supplementing your face-to-face class with flipped lessons or you are taking your course fully online, the information in this course will help you get started.
- Assessment of Learning - How do you know they know?
Concerns related to gainful employment, student loan debt, student retention, and graduation rates have trickled down to the program and classroom level to directly impact the ways in which student learning is documented and assessed. In this era of heightened scrutiny and increases in accountability measures, what do college and university faculty need to know about assessment, its purposes, and practices? The course author has a PhD in High Ed and regularly teaches and consults on this subject.
Learn the Think-Pair-Share cooperative learning strategy and consider some of the benefits of using technology for Think-Pair-Share learning activities. We’ll consider four different free applications and services you might use for Think-Pair-Share to help you evaluate which one would work best for your class. Using Google™ Docs as an example, we’ll discuss creating accounts, setting up the Think-Pair-Share question and sharing it with the class. Then we’ll go through each step in the learning activity, as students reflect on the question and create notes, debate with their partners, and then share their answers with the whole class. Finally, we’ll review some tips for using applications introduced in the demo.
- Creating an Infographic
In this online course, you'll learn how Infographics are an increasingly popular way to engage readers while avoiding the overuse of text. Whether you are a student, professor, casual blogger, or business professional, you can create compelling images that will wow your audience using free online tools.
- SketchUp for 3D Printing
Learn how to use SketchUp® to model several projects that can be sent to a 3D printer. The five projects, which increase in complexity, are a customized phone case that starts with a downloaded model, a small house with a matching roof, a sports logo keychain, a stand-up animal toy with two interacting parts and, finally, a bunk bed that can stack with identical beds and works with Lego® blocks. You'll also learn best practices while modeling, how to check for watertightness, and how to print a whole or partial model. After the completion of each project, an additional video will show some suggestions for similar projects you can try, which build upon the skills you just learned. The creator of this course is an author and an expert on SketchUp, 3D Printing, and Makerspaces.
